Fit and Nutritious
Welcome at

Did you know these days, most catering companies and food services are providing healthy alternatives for clients?  One of my fave Utah catering companies (talk about to die for cuisine) told me that many companies are now offering low-fat, low-calorie, and healthy food options which allows them to widen their services and broaden their client base.  Next time you are using a caterer or having food brought in for a party or other event, ask what healthy, low-fat options they provide.  Often times, the “healthy” food tastes just as delectable and delicious as the calorie-laden stuff.  Your guests won’t be able to tell a difference!

We have all heard of different and strange remedies for different kinds of illnesses. Well, since I have just gotten over being sick, I’d thought I would share some of my findings. The major plaguing annoyance of being sick is that sore throat. I got to the point that I couldn’t eat, swallow, and almost couldn’t breathe; needless to say: I was desperate. I did what any other self-respecting woman would do…I googled it. The first site advised to mix cayenne pepper and water and gargle it. I tried that. Ugh! That is truly one of the most disgusting things I have ever tasted. I would almost rather stay sick than ever taste that combo again.

So as I was trying that concoction, my mom suggested I warm up some water and add lemon and honey. This was amazing. Not only did it taste great, it actually helped my throat a little bit–at least enough so I didn’t have to lie in the fetal position while I tried to swallow.

So last night–well, I guess early this morning– at 3 a.m. I woke up coughing to the high heavens. I was really nervous that I wouldn’t get enough sleep to come into work the next day. I tried drinking lots of water, but it didn’t help. It was just cough after cough. So I decided that would be the perfect time to try out something I had just saw online the day before. I went into the kitchen and swallowed a mouth-full of honey. This instantly calmed my throat. It worked instantly. I didn’t wake up coughing the rest of the night. It was great. The news story that I had read early said that honey acts the same as cough syrup. It soothes the throat. So keep this in mind next time you have a bad cough. It is really a miracle!

My husband and I have decided one of the best ways to make sure we stay fit is by staying active outdoors, something we enjoy anyways.  With spring right around the corner, we’ve decided to step up efforts and enjoy everything our great home state of Utah has to offer.  In fact, Utah parks and recreation has some of the most diverse outdoor landscapes and subsequent activities in the nation.  Our goal is to experience as much of it as we possibly can, starting with the Narrows, located in Zion National Park.

The Narrows are some of the world’s most famous slot canyons and attract more than 4 million visitors a year.  Tell me this doesn’t look like one of the coolest places to visit!

I just found a great website to find how many calories are burned during any activity. It is a great calculator tool where you put in your weight and the activity and it will give you the time period and what it will burn. I am really into mountain biking, especially Utah mountain biking. I just found out that mountain biking for an hour, I will burn 544 calories! Try it out for yourself!

The majority of the population works in an office, or at least in some environment where they are more constricted than they would probably like. Even though we are stuck in an office all day, that doesn’t mean that we can’t maintain our fitness. Every variety of employee can use the following tips for working out at work. Whether you work in Utah transport or in a New York shopping mall, these tips are adaptable.

  • If you use a chair during your workday, use an exercise ball instead. This will target your abs all day, and will help improve your balancing abilities. :)
  • Set a timer to go off every hour so you can stretch and take a quick walk around. This will also help relieve stress and get your blood flowing again.
  • Go out of your way to go to restrooms and break rooms that are farther away. Use one on a different floor (don’t cheat and use the elevator!).
  • Instead of emailing everything to your coworkers, hand deliver the messages. This will give you a bit more activity throughout the course of the day.
  • Get a headset for your phone so you can move around while you talk.
  • Tighten and release your muscles throughout the day.
  • Take a jump rope with you. On your break or on lunch just jump rope for a short time.
  • Do various stretches throughout the day. You don’t even have to get out of your chair for these (side leans, back stretches, neck rolls, overhead arm stretches, trunk twists, and wrist and ankle rotations).

Believe me, these little things will add a big stress-relief to your day. These will help clear your mind while keeping your body healthy. Please feel free to add anymore of which you know. We love to share!

Whether you’re planning on getting pregnant, egg donation, or just want to become healthier, these help tips will help you get on the right track.

-Eat five to six well-balanced meals every day. Balance your meals with protein and carbohydrates. Be sure to include plenty of vegetables and fruits.

-Drink lots of water. Multiply your scale weight by 0.75 to determine how many ounces of water to drink a day.

-Don’t drink alcohol.

-Don’t smoke and avoid secondhand smoke.

-Exercise at least 30 minutes per day three to five times per week. Try walking, strength training, or a fun activity to stay active and healthy.

-Sleep about eight hours every night. Try to stay on the same sleep schedule.

-Don’t take over the counter medications, but stick to natural remedies. Consult your doctor if you have questions.

If you’re getting older and not at your ideal weight, there’s a great book that can help.  This book was written by a healthy doctor who knows what he’s talking about.  It’s called, What Does Your Doctor Look Like Naked?: Your Guide to Optimal Health.  It provides everyone who’s aging with some much needed plans for life to help you lose weight and keep it off.  It’s not a fad diet plan, but a straightforward guide from someone who knows how to stay in shape.

If you’re an athlete or bodybuilder looking to reach your ideal physique, I would recommend his other book, Better Than Steroids.  It details how you can make food timing and other principles work for you to build your best body possible.

Remember that you must make lifestyle changes to lose weight and keep it off.  This will ensure that you are healthy for the rest of your life.

What better way to eat fresh fruits and vegetables than to plant your own garden. Growing your own food is cheaper than buying at the store, plus you don’t have to worry about pesticides and other harmful things that can take away from a food’s nutrients.

Since I bought my new house, I made a corner specifically for vegetables and fruit trees. Near the front of my house, I have planters with plenty of herbs to make my food tasty and fresh.

If you want to start a garden, you only need a few tools to get started. Go to your local gardening or home improvement store for a spading fork, gloves, garden shears, and a watering can. ( Of course, you can also buy more items, such as a bow rake, a bug hat, a knee pad, and other fancy tools to make gardening easier for you.)

Although gardening isn’t available year round, you can freeze many of your items such as herbs and sliced zucchini for the winter time.

With some work you can be proud of your delicious accomplishments in the garden, and how they affect your waistline!

I found a map that showcased America’s fattest states. These states were relatively close to one another, and many were located where Southern fried chicken is a regular for dinner. Find out if your state ranks in the bottom ten.

Also check out this report that has a list of the 50 states in order from the healthiest down for 1990, 2005, and 2006. Or check out the list for 2007. Where does your state sit on the list?
